Calisthenics strength standards: How do your pull-ups and dips rank?

Enter your pull-ups, weighted pull-up or weighted dip and see where you stand. Every level comes from a published standard: a military fitness test for reps, and streetlifting federation ranks for added weight.

How many pull-ups should you be able to do?

For adult men, the US Marine Corps fitness test sets the minimum at 3 to 5 strict pull-ups and gives the maximum score at 18 to 23, depending on age. For women the minimum is 1 to 4 and the maximum score is 4 to 12.

These are dead-hang pull-ups with no time limit and no kipping, counted in one unbroken set.

Where these numbers come from

  • Pull-up reps, age 17 and over. The minimum, the maximum and the points are the official US Marine Corps scoring. The level names are our reading of that score: Passing from the minimum, Good from 70 points, Excellent from 85.
  • Pull-up reps, ages 14 to 16. The 50th and 85th percentiles from the Presidential fitness test.
  • Weighted pull-up and dip. Official ISF ranks by bodyweight class, for one repetition under competition rules. CMS is Candidate Master of Sport, MS is Master of Sport, and MSIC is Master of Sport, International Class. The Junior ranks sit below Class III.
  • Standards, not averages. A military test and a competition federation both describe trained people. We found no reliable average for the general population, so this page does not claim one.

How to move up a level

  • Below the minimum, or stuck on reps? Follow the pull-up progression, from dead hangs and negatives to weighted reps.
  • Chasing a weighted rank? Use the weighted pull-up 1RM calculator to find your current max and the loads to train with.
  • Re-test every four to eight weeks under the same conditions, and write the result down so you can see the trend.
  • Need a routine to get there? The workout plan generator builds one for your level, equipment and days per week.

Common questions

How many pull-ups should a man be able to do?

By the US Marine Corps fitness test, an adult man needs 3 to 5 strict pull-ups to pass, depending on age, and 18 to 23 for the maximum score. For ages 21 to 35 that is 5 to pass and 23 for full marks.

How many pull-ups should a woman be able to do?

By the US Marine Corps fitness test, an adult woman needs 1 to 4 strict pull-ups to pass, depending on age, and 4 to 12 for the maximum score. For ages 26 to 30 that is 4 to pass and 12 for full marks.

Is 10 pull-ups good?

Yes. For a man aged 21 to 35, 10 strict pull-ups is double the Marine Corps minimum of 5 and scores 57 points out of 100, with 23 needed for the maximum. For a woman aged 21 to 25, 10 pull-ups scores 95 out of 100.

What is the average number of pull-ups?

There is no reliable average for the general adult population. The closest published benchmarks are test standards: half of boys aged 14 to 17 could do 5 to 8 pull-ups in the Presidential fitness test, while the 50th percentile for girls of the same age was 0. In one training study, strength-trained men averaged about 16 pull-ups.

How many pull-ups should a 14 or 15 year old do?

In the Presidential fitness test, the 50th percentile for boys was 5 pull-ups at age 14 and 6 at age 15, and the 85th percentile was 10 and 11. For girls of both ages the 85th percentile was 2 pull-ups.

What is a good weighted pull-up?

For a man weighing up to 75 kg, the International Streetlifting Federation sets Class III at +40 kg, Class I at +57.5 kg and Master of Sport at +72.5 kg for one rep. Reaching Class III means pulling your bodyweight plus roughly half of it again.

What is a good weighted dip?

For a man weighing up to 75 kg, the International Streetlifting Federation sets Class III at +50 kg, Class I at +80 kg and Master of Sport at +105 kg for one rep. Dip ranks are higher than pull-up ranks in every weight class.

How many dips should I be able to do?

We found no official standard for bodyweight dip repetitions. A practical marker used in muscle-up training is 8 or more strict dips before starting the transition work. Once you add weight, the federation ranks on this page apply.

How are the levels in this tool decided?

For pull-up reps the tool uses the official Marine Corps points for your age and sex, and names the bands: Passing from the minimum, Good from 70 points, Excellent from 85 and Maximum score at 100. For weighted lifts it shows the highest federation rank whose standard you have reached in your bodyweight class.
